Old William Shatner Main Discussion - Media Overkill

Post subject: Media Overkill
Am I only one who thinks the media is way over the top with all this Michael Jackson coverage? Every news broadcast, telvision news magazine, radio station, newspaper, magazine, tributes, concerts, etc. Enough already. We all know the guys dead, and there's nothing new to tell. So drop it until there's something new. Personally, I'm waiting to see the autopsy report. I'll admit I never thought much about the guy, too many questions and accusations for my taste.

With all the stuff going on in the world, the sham elections in Iran, the withdrawl of troops from the urban areas in Iraq, the violence in Pakistan, North Korea bolstering their nukes with accusations against the US, what are we doing talking about Jackson nonstop?

Sorry, I just don't get it.

I'm with you on that, though it doesn't surprise me in the least.

The media is going to be orgasmic over this for a long time.

I feel bad that Farrah got the shaft on this. Billy Mays too, but he never would have gotten extensive coverage anyway.

The guy undeniably had OODLES of talent, but his absolute trainwreck of a life, plus the nasty possibilities of things he may have done....I don't understand how he has such legions of rabid fans anymore.

In part I think it's just the cult of personality/flock mentality. It's kinda sad.

What do I know? I hate most celebrities Smile

There is "passing as white" which was done to try to avoid prejudice and discrimination. That is a problem for quite a few families. It's what I discovered about my ancestors- some American Indians tried to pass as white if they could (in many cases just so they would survive). I've also heard of people who "tried to be" a race that they were not- and I've met people adopted into tribes because they were far more comfortable in that culture than in the one they were raised in. So, in my eyes, that may not have the stigma that it would for someone else. I don't think that is the case with Michael Jackson.

I also remember that Michael was diagnosed with Vitiligo- a skin disorder that I've known about- every since I read "Black Like Me" many years ago (when I was a kid). I've also known a couple of people over the years with vitiligo - and it's devastating. Michael Jackson wasn't trying to "be white" or trying to bleach out his skin- he LOOKED like someone with Vitiligo. (Not all types of Vitiligo look alike, but he looked like one of the people I knew several years ago with the disorder- skin texture and so on. The skin looked "off" in some way that I have trouble describing- but when I saw the pictures of him later in life the first thought was that he had the disorder- and then learned that he had actually said that he did.)

He also had Lupus, which is also bad bad news. It can be mild, but Lupus also is known to kill. In fact, that makes me wonder about what killed him...
littlestar - Jul 01, 2009 - 06:24 AM
Post subject:
Are you trying to describe the Vitiligo skin texture as Dead Fish like...or drowning victim like?
I've seen it too, when I worked at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home....

It may have explained the deterioration of his nose...the surgery wasn't done just to make it look more Anglo, as some think. The loss of pigmentation in his skin was causing patches too, so the laser work was to try and even out the obvious perimeters and the Oxygen capsule helped with the healing and microbial control. Lupus will often cause blood sugar disorder, vertigo, tinnitus, Menieres Disease, BAD arthritic pain in joints and tendons...so that can explain the often wobbly,or silly, gait that he would get. I heard awhile ago that he was starting to have seizures too....
We may never know all, as he tried desperately to keep all of his Health Problems a secret. He would rather people think he was just weird, rather than really ill...because THEN he wouldn't have been allowed to do concerts and DANCE.

I think he preferred to live a shorter amount of time and do what he loved, than to be protected from it and live longer missing it.

THERE...I just did Media Overkill myself.... Embarassed

I never thought it was my business what Michael Jackson looked like, or how he walked, talked, ate, etc. His appearance is no one's business but his own, and he could do whatever he felt he needed to do either because of his health, or just because he felt like it.

But, if he did not outright molest children, he did confess, at least, to totally inappropriate behaviour with him. I'm sorry, but the fact that he died doesn't change that. I enjoyed most of his music, but I cannot, and will not, excuse his actions with kids.

I think it's that Michael Jackson died so suddenly and so soon when he was due to go on his comeback as well as his final tour and that he's the biggest pop star in the world and that's why he gets all this media coverage. The media is overkill indeed because it overshadowed the others that passed away before him:Ed McMahon,Farrah Fawcett,Billy Mays and Fred Travalena, which we should not forget.Michael was bigger than big,in spite of his outrageous, personal demons and his notorious court troubles. That's the price of fame, fortune and power. As for me,my interest is in his music which is his legacy.R.I.P.

You nailed that one right on the button, Gorny. The other nite I watched the beginning of the BET Awards and, of course, the first speaker was some half-assed rap artist and he starts off with "Michael Jackson was a BLACK man...HE belonged to US! WE just SHARED him with everyone ELSE." Quite a revelation, I always thought it was Jackson's own idea to share his talent with the rest of the world. AT EVERY CONCEIVABLE OPPORTUNITY those on the left JUST LOVE to interject racial politics. Last week within less than 2 hours after it being reported that Michael Jackson had died, you had Sharpton delivering a phony sounding diatribe supposedly lamenting Jackson's passing and how alot of people who trashed Jackson while he was living were now praising him. I'm surprised he didn't mention Fox News by name. As far as overkill, the 24/7 news networks have been overkilling for many years now. I remember what it was like before the 9/11 attack. Hour after hour, minute after minute for many weeks, their single-minded fixation with Gary Condit. 12 hours after the attack, WHO'S Gary Condit? The mass media has been wallowing in overkill for years...and it's not just that. It's their overall demeanor. Most of them come across as Hollywood gossip reporters instead of journalists. I've been sick of our mass media for years.

You know, it's a real shame that the left has such an ugly side to it because there are hundreds of millions of people wordwide, of all races and ethnicities, who want to pay homage to Michael Jackson because of the extraordinary musical entertainer that he was...but unfortunately, all some on the left see in the passing of Michael Jackson is an opportunity to feed their hate by using the event to take petty potshots at whitey. It is disgusting, sickening and infuriating.

Funny Morgram, I don't think I see anything leftist in what you highlighted. Perhaps it was a poor word choice in that the rapper was obviously an African American and he obviously was claiming MJ for African Americans... it wasn't a massive leftist statement... in fact it was a bit of truth in that MJ was originally African American... no matter how many surgeries he had to change that.

In fact, that makes me wonder about what killed him...

A murderer - probably one with an "M.D." after his name - killed Michael Jackson.

They discovered Diprivan (brand name, the generic is Propolfol) in MJ's house.

That's a med that ---
isn't found/carried in any drugstore/public pharmacy
is never even considered for uses in a private medical office... much less in a private home
only administered (properly) by an anesthesiologist and drung surgery or 'in house' surgical procedures in a shopital ICU or CCU
only properly administered via IV
never fully safely administered, even when by an anasthesiologist in an O.R.

The only way such a med got into MJ's house is having been brought in by a doctor (or, possibly, any non-doctor O.R. staff) who stole from a hospital pharmacy.

MJ himself didn't get his hands on this. Nor did he take it himself. Nor is it at all even remotely likely that he had access to a hospital pharmacy himself.
Someone got it illegally and administered it with the intent to kill. No one with access to it could possibly NOT know how immediately deadly the stuff is...

Welcome back. Trust you had a bonne vacance.

Palin quitting was in the cards. Sounds like a kick-back scandal is about to blow up in her face. Federal investigators have seized documents from a builder who won lucrative government construction contracts in Alaska, after building new home for Palin and reportedly supporting her in other (monetary) ways. Not to mention an unflattering article in Vanity Fair that probably cleaved her heart.

No she is just tired of all the crap that is being printed off that are false or ethics probes that cost the person nothing to issue but it cost her MONEY that they don't have time to fart around with in court...15 ethics probes were done on her by Democrats in the last year that had a vendetta against her and all were thrown out but one that she paid in FULL for with her OWN money.

Would you like it if people were bringing ethics probes against you on your job against you that you knew were false and prove it in court but you had to pay for all those court visits and lawyers out of your own pocket...15 of them in one year....????

Camping in 15 deg C weather with rain most of the time... however, we did manage to take in all but 2 of our favourite activities. Had to give up kayaking in Malpeque Bay (the waves were too high) and we skipped going to Greenwich beach for a picnic. Ate dinner twice in our tent!!

However, Canada Day was great despite it being overcast... saw 3 bands, ate Cow's ice cream, had dinner on Peakes Quay as well as our usual lobster fest at Richard's in Covehead Harbor. Did much hiking in the Stanhope national park and a lot of beachcombing on Stanhope beach. Had fabulous luncheon at the Dunes in Brackley Beach and we saw Transformers II at Brackley Beach drivein (Star Trek was also on the bill but Sarah was getting tired.)

Took lots of photographs, had campfire cookouts (including the biggest scallops ever fresh from Covehead) when it didn't rain (thank heavens for that Coleman stove...), roasted marshmellows and explored the Delvay beach area. We rented a caravan but were upgraded to a Buick Enclave with 2600 free km. We brought it back 1 km over the limit!! 20c extra. The satellite XM was great during those radio neverlands from Trois Rivieres through to Moncton... llistened to a lot of comedy...

"ain't nothing longer than a Canadian highway..."
