Post subject: TV Land
5 years ago TV Land was a haven for 1950s amd 1960s TV shows; everything from Dennis the Menace with Jay North to Superman with George Reeves. Today TV Land is an abysmal pit consisting of Good Times, The Jeffersons, The Cosby Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Leave it to Beaver, The Addams Family and Three`s Company. Their weekend programming consists almost entirely of constantly looped episodes of Gunsmoke and Bonanza. The TV Land dot com website STILL maintains, for some incomprehensible reason, a webpage listing dozens of shows they have not run IN 5 FULL YEARS! TV Land is a DISGRACE to american cable television.

Yeah, well. It`s pretty damn easy for some of you to mock me on this subject because some of you obviously have not watched as many hours of TV as I have the past 40 years. 100% percent of the shows, movies and cartoons I grew up with in the sixties are nowhere on TV today. I would have to spend thousands of dollars to buy all the things I want to see again on DVD.

Why, Batman? Am I wrong about TV Land? Am I wrong about 1950s and 1960s TV shows being nowhere on american cable TV today? Am I wrong about having to spend hundreds of dollars on DVDs to see all my childhood programs again?...and please...specifically answer these questions.

Well, you had better make a stop at Office Max to purchase a boatload of printer paper, ink and envelopes; you are going to need a lot of it. Wink

Sadly Morgram, until people start realizing the greatness that they once were able to behold on TV each and every day, you will have to bide your time as a part of the minority. I myself miss a lot of those older programs... having none of them though means I have gone into reading books... Try to find yourself a hobby other than TV watching and perhaps someday you will flip on your TV and be delighted with what you see on it.

EVERYBODY has to pay for their basic channel line-up. Gee, I did not know that. I`ve lost count of how many times it has been cavalierly suggested to me that I go out and buy what I want on DVD. If I ever win the lottery maybe I`ll do that. Lifelong viewers like myself DESERVE to see the beloved shows we grew up with AGAIN. That`s all I`m saying ESPECIALLY when you consider that most 50s/60s TV fare has been completely ignored for the last 30 years of syndication. The wonderful shows of the 1950s and 1960s ought to be put back on the air again and it IS LONG OVERDUE.

1 Because it is getting old and tiresome listening to you whine about TV Land.
2 Don't know, don't care if you are wrong or right. I watch a couple hours a day at the most. Old crap, new crap is still crap.
3 See answer # 2.
4 If you enjoy the crap so much them either buy it or don't see it. You seem to be fixated with watching TV. Too much TV will rot your brain. Read a damn book and let your brain be your TV. It is called IMAGINATION!! Hell you can put John Wayne in all the lead roles of the books you read.
Turn off the tube dude and widen your horizons. Get out and see stuff in real life. It is much more entertaining than looking at electrons hitting a CRT.

In my area TV land is part of the Basic Extended package but not the Basic cable package. There is an extreme difference in price as well since Basic is only the extremely local channels, roughly 10 in all versus over 60 channels in the Basic Extended package.

Either way... you should have kept your frustrations on TV land down to one thread... I understand your frustrations but by posting so many different threads on the same general idea does tend to upset people.

Just remember Morgram that though many of us like the old TV land, most of the posting members of the board don't share your zeal for changing that channel's programing because they've either...

A) Realized the fact that in order for TV land to make money, they have to cater to the ratings and televise what garners more ratings. (I hope you realize that those people posting on the TV land message board represent only a fraction of those who regularly view TV land, and so do not represent the majority.)

B) Realized that they are interested in other programming on other channels as well. Not all '80's and newer programs are mindless drivel.

I like programs like:

Home Improvement
Seinfeld
Everybody Loves Raymond
ER
Boston Legal
Law and Order
Law and Order SVU
Who's Line is it Anyway?

to name a few...

I miss the old programs like Leave It to Beaver, Gomer Pyle USMC, and Hogan's Heroes but I do have enough to watch until they decide to bring them back to the screen.

C) have given up hope on TV Land already and have already started investing in DVDs and such or found another hobby other than watching TV.

Smile

Beating us over the head with the topic in multiple threads will most likely turn people against you because they don't want to be inundated with it all of the time.

That is my request. I know it will never happen but that's what you have this board for right?
Also, TVL keeps saying they go by Neilsen ratings. I don't think that should be the basis for the whole decision making process in scheduling shows. I find it VERY VERY hard to believe that Gunsmoke, Bonanaza & Andy Griffith are watched enough to warrant the amount they are shown. I think TVL should pay attention to what viewers write on these boards and also thru the regular mail and phone calls ( if anybody does that anymore ) Also, what happened to a little imagination and simply doing your own thing? Why does it have to be about ratings? Money? You CAN STILL make enough money to survive and show programs that people are requesting. People will usually only come online and post like this if they have something to complain about so that's why these message boards are predominantly negative. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT- ABSOLUTELY NO REALITY SHOWS, NO MOVIES AND CUT WAY WAY DOWN ON THE GUNSMOKE & BONANZA. Otherwise change the name of your damn channel to WE PLAY WHATEVER WE WANT TO MAKE MONEYLAND. p.s. yes, the level of joyous contentment among the multitudes of TV Land viewers is cresting rather high these days. -morgram

While channel surfing tonite I landed on TV Land. They were showing an episode of mash. It was the one where Gen. Mitchell rewards Hawkeye for operating on his son with a weekend in Tokyo and puts up the officer`s club. An early seasons episode immediately followed by a later seasons episode with Mike Farrell and Harry Morgan. What is left of the TVL viewership will certainly appreciate TVL`s fidelity to episode chronology.

Post subject: Time compression
A very annoying habit that the imbeciles who are now running television in america today have taken to is time compression; reducing the number of frames in whatever is being shown to lessen the actual running time of a movie or tv program for the sake of more commercial time. Of course, this nonsense is suppose to be invisible to the viewer but it is not. The result of time compression is a continual jerkiness in the movement of the video image. TV Land of course has applied this very irritating practice to it`s early morning showings of tos and I assume to all their programs in general.

I loved Dragnet as well. Not so much the really early ones, but the ones with Harry Morgan.

And I can understand what Morgram means about time compression. A lot of these old shows I can remember, but if I didn't, I think I'd have trouble knowing what was going on because they have cut out chunks to make way for commercials. Really frustrating.

Oh yeah, and my new favorite ~ when they are running the credits in a split screen with the start of the new show. Confused

I wonder why TV Land never picked up Perry Mason? Now there's a classic I would love to see run.

Buying the DVD's is one option. But, it can get really expensive very quickly. I bought a Perry Mason DVD, and it was $40 for 1/2 of one season. That adds up pretty quickly.

And, I admit I can be lazy at times. Kind of easier when you are tired to just plop in front of the boob tube and watch something, than to get the DVD out, etc. Hey ~ that is time I could be spending making myself snacks! Snacks!!!!! Wink

I'm sure you're right, Doc.

I remember the old USA network (absolutely loved the old B movies they played all night in the weekends). At one point I can remember timing the commercials. 15 minutes of them before the show came back on! It was sad. I just stopped watching it all together.

Hey morgram, can I have the remote? Cool
Yes you may have the remote, Mirizor, if you can name me ONE cable network in America today who`s programming consists exclusively of 1950s/1960s TV shows...just one.

Does your God live in the TV Morgram? Let me know if He answers you.
I quite frankly don`t understand your remark, Mirizor. I`m a child of the sixties and grew up with sixties TV programs and I...well...I`d like very much to see most of them again. You can`t understand that?

I am also a child of the very late fifties...early sixties. I somewhat do remember shows like Peter Gunn, 77 Sunset Strip (tv version-the soundtrack I remember listening to...the finger-snapping), sci fi shows like Outer Limits, Twilight Zone...later it was The Invaders with Roy Thinnes. I was more into the sci fi genre.
But I also liked some comedies like F-Troop, Get Smart, McHale's Navy. And if I was loaded with pocket change I would get those programs on dvd if available.

It aired on CBS I believe from 1959-1963. Most shows from the 1950s and 60s have been virtually ignored for the last 30 years and as a result many TV viewers like yourself have never seen them and therefore have been denied the opportunity to see how genuinely funny american TV once upon a time actually was. The last time I saw Dennis the Menace myself was back in 2003 when TV Land ran 10 episodes stretched out over a period of four weeks.

There is no argument. What everyone is hinting around at is shut up about it already and let go of the remote, get to the video store, rent it and copy it. Enough about the stupid TV channel already. Either that or make one thread like Vito does with his poop. Then we can be sure to stay away from it as well.

My prediction for 2008 -

Note to Mr. Jones -
You are a disgrace to TVLand viewers (past and present) everywhere. You have single-handedly destroyed what used to be one of the better channels on television.
