ANTI-TREK |

I received several emails over the weekend asking me what it means to be "anti-Trek." For me, being anti-Trek meant having a real ambivalence about my relationship to the original series and especially to the character of Captain Kirk. On one hand I knew it was a wonderfully creative and special show with unique characters and interesting dramatic situations. |

In my Dad's last piece, he talked about how he approaches humor. I can definitely attest to the fact that humor has always played a big part in his life, and in his family. He is often found making a pun or pulling a practical joke on someone.

What's it like at a movie premiere? When I'm with my dad, it's a wildly exciting event. We get out of our car and the flashbulbs go off. Walking down the red carpet, people are calling out from all directions. It's also a bit intimidating and pressured in that the cameras and people demand a response, and you have to have one ready. |

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it's my Dad, flying fearlessly above the clouds, on his way to yet another activity. It's true; he's always traveling by aircraft, not spacecraft. It's also true that he doesn't wear a cape, or a Starfleet uniform when he flies - just jeans and a T-shirt, usually. But he still remains a hero of the skies. The man probably criss-crosses the country more often than any comic strip character, or his alter ego, that guy from Star Trek. |

Have you ever had an experience you couldn't quite explain? A feeling that something might happen, and then it actually occurred? A thought about a friend and a few minutes later that person calls you? A nagging idea that you've been someplace even though you've never actually visited that particular location? These less-than-typical events make up the stuff that fascinates me. |

Springtime means flowers, Easter bunnies, and showers, but for my Dad, it also means The Hollywood Charity Horse Show. He spends a great deal of time organizing the event, which benefits, among others, Ahead With Horses, a charity that teaches children with disabilities how to interact with horses. The time spent with their hoofed friends improves these children's functionality to a remarkable and touching degree. |

Ever since I was little, I've watched my Dad sign autographs for people. It seemed a normal activity that came with the territory - people wanted a little piece of him to take home, to remind them that they had a special moment with him. I certainly never thought I would be someday be included in this process, that anyone would want my autograph for any reason. I consider myself an ordinary sort of gal, with ordinary issues like everyone else. Why would anyone bother with my autograph? |

One evening recently, I was sculpting in my art class. My teacher's daughter, a precocious eleven- year-old, was visiting us. She was using us as an "experiment" for one of her classes at school. She went around to each person and held up a poster with various images on it - a cat, a dog, a fire hydrant, a cookie, the word "America," and the word "food" among others. |

Ever since I can remember, fans have been part of my father's life. One of my very first memories of how they played a role in his existence came at, of all places, Disneyland. I was enjoying the park with my sister, Leslie, my mother, and my father. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I heard screaming. I looked up and saw three or four women jumping up and down and excitedly pointing in my father's direction. He smiled, waved, and kept us all walking in a forward direction. |

This last weekend was the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Every year I marvel at how my Dad and his cadre of volunteers put on such an elaborate event. I know it takes a tremendous amount of dedication on all their parts to pull it off.
