Father's Day |

To me, Father’s Day was all about dedication. Since my Dad was competing in a horse show in Huntington Beach, our original plan was to meet up for lunch near the show ring. The time of his class was changed, so we changed our plans to dinner. It then turned out that he could meet for neither lunch NOR dinner, so we had to cancel the second plan as well. The entire group ended up meeting him and Elizabeth at a coffee house in Los Angeles at 7:45 a.m. so we could wish him a happy Father’s Day and give him his gifts. As I have the dubious distinction of being the only night owl in the family, this was a sign of my true dedication! Of course, he couldn’t resist making a couple of jokes about early risers aimed in my direction, but I knew he was thrilled I had made the effort. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. My Dad’s a special guy, after all. That’s what Father’s Day is all about. |

It?s hard to believe it?s that time of year again ? that time when, gasp, my Dad turns another year older. I (and he, I?m sure) prefer to think of it as his turning another year wiser. And the truth of the matter is, he IS another year full of experiences that have bettered his life in so many ways.

These are the words I remember. I was wearing a Halloween costume; I had dirt smudged on my face. There were a lot of people crowded into a small set; my father was standing at the front of a room that had been made to look like a decrepit schoolroom. The kids crowded around him and began pretending to hit him. I was lifted up and brought over to him to give him a swipe. I kept laughing so they had to do it over a couple of times. Finally, I got the hang of it. |
