A LABOR OF LOVE
Posted by: LeopardHead on Saturday, May 04, 2002 - 02:04 AM

Fan Club For the love of children, of horses, of giving back…who knows exactly what drives William Shatner year after year to dedicate himself to such a big event as the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. What we do know is that he is committed to making the show the best it can be each and every year.

While the horse show runs from Thursday through Sunday, the main activities occur on Saturday afternoon and evening.

While the horse show runs from Thursday through Sunday, the main activities occur on Saturday afternoon and evening. Planning begins months beforehand...and Bill is involved in every aspect. The pre-show meetings are generally held in his office and both he and his assistant, Robin, oversee EVERYTHING! Bill is the driving force of the show, and his energy and enthusiasm are contagious.

This year, for the first time, Wells Fargo was the title sponsor. The show was blessed once again with good weather, although it didn't look very promising on Friday when the predictions for rain loomed in the forecast. The afternoon's activities began around 2:15pm when around 2,000 kids representing LA's BEST arrived via bus. They were given t-shirts, treated to lunch and spent the afternoon enjoying a myriad of activities.

The kids had the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts projects, get their face painted, visit with animals in the petting zoo, interact with policemen and firemen and watch an Imperial Knights performance. Clowns, magicians and costumed talent including Star Trek and Star Wars characters roved the event site. There was even a Mugato!

Late in the afternoon, the gates officially opened and the silent auction started. At 5:30pm, the kids joined the rest of the horse show attendees in the covered arena for the opening ceremonies which included a parade of equine units, costumed talent and the cast of Passions who come in support of the Ahead With Horses children.

Following the singing of the National Anthem, Bill welcomed everyone, thanked the sponsors and introduced the Ahead with Horses demonstration. (See Bill's Space this week for a video clip.) Then the audience was treated to entertainment from Tad Griffith and La Noria, courtesy of the Western Heritage Autry Museum and Mundocharro.com. When the performance concluded, reining competition continued in the main arena.

The Western dinner party was donated by Outback Steakhouse. It started at 7:00pm. Entertainment was provided by Speedtwin. Highlights of the evening included a performance by the LA's BEST Folklorico Dancers of Sierra Park Elementary School. Late in the evening, Bill took to the dance floor with other partygoers for a half hour of line dancing. The evening was rounded out by the conclusion of the silent auction at 10:00pm. Items incuded autographed photos, books, scripts, artwork, jewelry, Western gear, and even Bil's wetsuit from a whalehunters documentary he did a few years ago.

Aa lot of hard work went into this year's show as both Bill and Liz mentioned in their columns this week, but it was a labor of love because of the much-needed funds that were raised for Ahead With Horses and LA's BEST. Below, you can see the look of satisfaction on Bill and Elizabeth's faces as they interacted with the kids in the afternoon.
