I look forward to the Pasadena Grand Slam, the mega convention that takes place every year in, you guessed it, Pasadena. This year I had the pleasure of looking forward to greeting a very special lady?Joan Collins. She was making an appearance right after mine, and I was hoping to say hello to one of the most memorable ladies of the Classic Trek series, not to mention her many other accomplishments.
But first?I had to show my mug to the audience. I had a lot of fun, especially when answering questions from the audience. One question, which took me on a meandering, at least ten minute answer, was, "did I do my own stunts on Showtime, the movie?" As my bruised and battered body can attest, I most definitely DID do my own stunts!
Another great moment was when a cutie-pie little girl took center stage Her name was Beatrice, and she was so adorable I pulled her up in front of the audience. I leaned down and placed the microphone in front of her little face and asked her, "Beatrice, are you an alien?" She didn't answer, but made a face and turned away from the microphone. She got a big laugh, but I'm not sure little Beatrice thought it was so funny!
My favorite moment came from a gentleman who was standing in line to ask a question. He had two small dogs with him, both wearing Star Trek uniforms. I discussed how one man I'd met had done a similar thing out of his need for love.So I asked him, "Do you have love?" He quickly answered, "Oh no, I'm married." The audience burst into laughter, and I did, too. I think that might have been one of the funniest moments I can remember at a convention.
And of course?Joan. What a treat it was to see her again. I remember her as warm and funny, a first class professional lady and a wonderful actress. It was a pleasure to be with her back then and to see her again now. She's had such an exciting life since Star Trek, but surely nothing was quite like being in front of a Star Trek audience as she was last Saturday afternoon.
For all of you who were there, I hope you had as much fun as I did. For those of you who missed it?there's always next year.
