Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it's my Dad, flying fearlessly above the clouds, on his way to yet another activity. It's true; he's always traveling by aircraft, not spacecraft. It's also true that he doesn't wear a cape, or a Starfleet uniform when he flies - just jeans and a T-shirt, usually. But he still remains a hero of the skies. The man probably criss-crosses the country more often than any comic strip character, or his alter ego, that guy from Star Trek.  |

The Amazing Flying Machine
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it's my Dad, flying fearlessly above the clouds, on his way to yet another activity. It's true; he's always traveling by aircraft, not spacecraft. It's also true that he doesn't wear a cape, or a Starfleet uniform when he flies - just jeans and a T-shirt, usually. But he still remains a hero of the skies. The man probably criss-crosses the country more often than any comic strip character, or his alter ego, that guy from Star Trek.
Let's face it, he works - a lot. More often than not, these jobs are located away from home. So he travels. I think he knows the location of every airport Starbucks from here to New York. You would, too, if you loved coffee as much as he does and you had five minutes to spare before your flight left without you.
During his life, he's been required to be in many different places for many different reasons. I can remember his traveling to the East coast often when I was little. Then came Spain, Mexico, Iran, England, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Portugal, Africa…. well, you get the idea.
I know he gets tired from all this traveling, but honestly, you can't tell by looking at him. He doesn't slow down, not even for a minute. His idea of a "nap" is a ten-minute siesta. This can get particularly grueling if you are actually on a trip with him.
I just got back from New York, where I joined him for his "Showtime" publicity jaunt, and I can honestly say I don't know how he does it. Forty-five interviews in two days, plus Priceline radio spots. I mean, I'm exhausted. And I didn't even do any of the interviews!
He wrapped up the week by appearing at FYE in Century City with Leonard, where he energetically signed copies of "Mind Meld" for over two hours. He wanted to go out to dinner and a movie afterwards, but I just couldn't do it. Someone has to be the voice of reason here.
Sometimes I think he's a genetic mutant. Other times I just think he's crazy. Mostly, I just admire him. After all, he is probably single handedly responsible for keeping the airline industry functioning. Think of all the miles he's accumulated. Who knows, if he keeps it up, he might accumulate enough for a seat on the Shuttle. And I KNOW he's never been in space before.
