On Sunday evening, I had the honor of attending NBC's 75th Anniversary Celebration in New York. For me, it was an exercise in nostalgia. I got to see some of the casts from great television hits of yesteryear - and, alas, I was one of them!
I met some old friends - Kent McCord, Don Adams, Barbara Feldon - among them, and spoke at great length to the head of NBC, Bob Wright. I said hello to Barbara Walters, and asked who designed her lovely dress. It was Oscar de la Renta, in case you want to know.
Martin Short acted the fool for one segment, and I went along with it. Prior to the show starting, I was asked if I would allow Martin to sit on my lap and kiss me. I think he's very funny, so I said yes. The next thing I knew I was going along with the joke. It was one of the more unusual moments of the evening!
Sid Caesar and Bill
Another big moment for me was Sid Caesar's appearance. I watched him come to life on stage, and perform his old magic. I also loved watching all the old film clips when NBC was just starting to become a television network. I had actually performed in many of those old programs, so for me the history I've had with the network really began before Star Trek. Of course, Star Trek is the shining crown in my experience with NBC. I felt very honored to be included in their legacy of memorable television events.
Truly, it was a remarkable evening. What made it especially wonderful was my chance to blend the old with the new, as I had my lovely wife, Elizabeth, at my side the whole time.
