Did you ever wonder what it would be like to spend the summer with my Dad? Join me at "Lisabeth's Space" and I'll give you all the juicy details.  |
I have to confess that summer is usually a pretty quiet time for me. I rarely plan trips and spend most of my time hiding from the heat and sun (ah, the plight of the redhead!). This summer, however, I hung out quite a bit with my Dad? so, of course, I ran around like a madman! NO ONE can keep up with this man (though his wife, Elizabeth, does a pretty good job of it), but I did my best. Let me hit some of the highlights?
Probably the most unusual and fun time was our trip to Key West, Florida. My Dad was invited down there to perform at the San Carlos Institute, along with crooner Brian Evans. He sang/talked (ala ?Priceline? format) two songs and received a wonderfully enthusiastic response. The rest of the trip was playtime. At the insistence of my Dad, we got up early the next day and rented jet skis. He drove around with Elizabeth at top speed, disappearing into the distance. I couldn?t find them for a whole hour! That night we were so tired that we couldn?t remember our room numbers. My Dad had to get a new card key from the desk, and when he got in his room, he realized the safe was open. ?We?ve been robbed!? he yelled to Elizabeth. It took them several minutes to realize they were in MY room! Meanwhile, I was downstairs at security, trying to explain that my room key wouldn?t work. By the time we figured out we?d switched rooms, we were laughing so hard we were crying. Chalk it up to too much sun and a mango margarita or two.
We also fit in kayaking among the mangroves, fishing, and a diving excursion. Not to mention some AMAZING dinners. By the end of the trip, I was exhausted, happy, and relaxed. Water sports are my favorite activity, and so I left with a giant smile on my face. It?s such a privilege to be able to experience a trip like that, especially with my Dad. I consider time with him truly precious.
A few weeks later we were off once again to Washington, D.C., where he was competing in the Grand Prix race. Now, you?d think with Key West, his horse shows, and other work related activities, the man would have had enough. But no. He loves action, and action was what he sought at the races. He finished with a good time, but his team didn?t succeed in capturing the title. Oh well. Next year, I guess. Meanwhile, I managed to fit in a trip to the Smithsonian, where I saw (among other things) the Apollo spacecraft, dinosaur exhibitions, and my personal favorite, the Hope diamond. Probably the most eerie thing I saw was the hat President Lincoln was wearing when he was assassinated.
The next day we took a tour of the city and visited the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. We lingered at these places for a while, paying our respects to the men and women who have fought for this country. I had never been to Washington D.C. before, so I was grateful to have the opportunity to visit these places. It made the struggle for freedom very up close and immediate for me.
Now, of course, the end of summer is approaching and with it comes, you guessed it?.SPPLAT ATTACK!!!!! Captain Shatner is gearing up for what promises to be an extraordinarily fun paintball event. He has even thrown down the gauntlet to the Borgs (check out his post on the message board), so watch out for him ? he means business! The event takes place in Joliet, Illinois, on August 31, so I hope you?ll be there. Even if you can?t make it, you?ll be able to share in the fun by watching the DVD of the event, produced by our friends at Creative Light Entertainment.
I hope your summer has been a healthy and happy one. Personally, I?m looking forward to fall. I need the rest.
