Father's Day

My Dad's a pretty special guy. I know he piloted a starship as Capt. Kirk, ran after criminals as TJ Hooker, and now sings as the Priceline spokesman. But his best and proudest role is as a dad. I felt very fortunate to be able to celebrate Father's Day with him and tell him what a special man he really is to me.

We did the usual activity when the whole Shatner family is together - eat! We gathered in the kitchen as my Dad and Elizabeth did most of the work (that's right - my Dad actually LIKES to cook, but it's Elizabeth that's the real master chef!) My Dad is usually in charge of the meat (this time it was tri-tip) and Elizabeth made turkey breast, mashed potatoes, corn, and green beans. My sister, Leslie, made salad, and I supplied dessert to complete the feast.

Then we all sat down together - Dad, Elizabeth, all three daughters, assorted husbands and grandchildren - to enjoy the banquet. My thoughts went often to the other members of my own family who had lost their fathers, as well as many people I don't know personally who no longer had their fathers with them. I felt truly blessed to be able to enjoy the day with my whole family there together.

At the end of the meal, it was time for presents. I was very proud of the gift I had been hiding in my closet since the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. At the show's silent auction area, I had hovered around a beautiful suede jacket and motorcycle gloves in order to procure them for my Dad. I knew I wanted to give them to him for Father's Day, and was anxious that I make the top bid for them. About two minutes before the bidding closed, I actually got into a bidding war with a woman for the jacket. It was my steely-eyed determination to get the jacket for a Father's Day gift that finally won out. That poor woman never had a chance! When it came time to give him the hard-won gifts, he was truly touched. The fact that the money used to buy the gifts went to charity made the moment that much more special.

We finished out the evening with the dessert (a delicious fruit tart and ice cream). But the sweetest moment was at the end of the night when I told him I loved him
