Too bad Halloween only comes once a year. It?s the only time I can pretend I?m from another world and still fit into this one. Some of you know I?m quite a fan of Lord of the Rings. What better opportunity than Halloween is there to pretend I?m actually from Middle Earth? So last Halloween (and probably this one, too!) I took the opportunity to dress like an elf. What I didn?t expect was to be mistaken for a real one.  |
Let me explain. I painstakingly assembled my costume, aided and abetted by my wonderfully talented mate, Andrew, who specializes in visual effects for television and movies. He actually sculpted, molded, painted, and applied a real set of elf ears for me. They were so good that it was impossible to tell where the silicon ears ended and my real ears began.
We accompanied my Dad and Eliz to a friend?s house for a rockin? party. During dinner, I was seated next to a nice lady dressed like a French maid (don?t ask). She commented on my costume and I told her I was an elf from Lord of the Rings. As a joke, I said I dressed like an elf because my ears were already shaped like one. With a serious and sympathetic look on her face she replied, ?Really? Those are your real ears?? I replied with equal seriousness, ?Yes. I?ve learned to live with them. You know, everyone has something they have to deal with.?
A gentleman across the table, dressed in a cowboy outfit, joined in the conversation. ?I have a cousin with Spock ears. He grew his hair over them so no one would notice.? At that point, I saw my Dad glowering at me from across the table. Apparently, there was only room for one practical joker in the family. Clearly, it was time to stop teasing these poor people.
I looked at them with incredulity. ?Hello, Halloween, guys? These aren?t my real ears. Andrew applied them for me.?
The cowboy looked relieved. ?I was going to say. I mean, the irony of Captain Kirk having a daughter with Spock ears. Well, I mean??
Clearly, this poor man was missing the point of my entire costume. ?I?m not a Vulcan. I?m an ELF. I?m an ELF. Didn?t you see Lord of the Rings?? They both shook their heads. This sad fact upset me more than being mistaken for a Vulcan.
?I don?t know what an elf looks like, do you?? He asked. I had to stop at this point. I only THOUGHT I knew what an elf looked like, just like Peter Jackson and his talented team thought they knew, too. It was only conjecture, after all.
Mmmm, I thought. Forget this Halloween stuff. It was time for a trip to Middle Earth.

Can't wait for the photos, your costume sounds great. I love "Lord of the Rings" as well and I bet you looked great. The high cheekbones would defintely suit the pointed ears. What was the colour of your outfit?
Can't possibly imagine where you get the "teasing" gene from!!??!!

If I had to dress up in a costume I would have chosen to be the Romulan commander from the episode "The Enterprise Incident". Except I would make the skirt a tad bit longer...

Hi, Liz! Thanks for sharing that wonderful and hilarious story with us. I haven't gotten dressed up or gone trick-or-treating in a few years, now (I'm 19) but my girlfriend still loves to go and so I will start again this year :) She and are are HUGE Lord of the Rings fans, so we will be dressing up as Aragorn and Arwen!
We also dressed up like them for my first Renaissance Faire with her and I got plenty of looks from people who might have been thinking I was the real thing :-p Cait (my girlfriend), believe it or not, uses Super Glue to point her ears into elf ears! I have to let the old facial hair grow out to complete the look for my costume :-D If you (or any member for that matter) are interested in seeing some pictures I would be more than happy to send them to you! By the way, my girlfriend MADE the costumes and they are simply amazing. I'll be sure to make a post out of it when the pictures are in. I can't wait to see your's, Liz!

AHAHAHAaaaaa! That's great!
Reminds me of the time I dressed up as a generic FBI agent. Now, I have long dark brown hair and at least TWO people mistook me for Agent Scully from the X-Files. And then Brandon (who is slightly taller than I at 6ft with the same color hair) as Agent Mulder, even though he was dressed up as Agent Smith from Matrix (ear piece and everything.) That one was more understandable. but still. Short red hair??? Helloo...?

Kewl Lisabeth!
I've done one from the fantastic in 81. I consulted LOTR and contrived a costume with white sheet cowels, silver makeup and strobe lights. In 84 at Benning I helped a buddy construct a supergross costume, then made one even grosser myself. Both were totally Un-PC,
This year I was a "general" at a Freddy vs Jason, horror themed paintball game. Since Jason was our evil spiritual leader and the one we were trying to resurrect, I couldn't be that, so I went as the scariest thing I could think of, John Kerry, trying to get the votes of the dead of course. I even stuck a bottle of pre-ban Heinz ketchup in my PGP holster.
