THE SHOW...GOES ON!
Posted by: Jane.Singer on Sunday, January 04, 2004 - 05:57 AM

Fan Club The show must go on...or so the saying goes, and William Shatner's recent appearances on December 13th and 14th in Anaheim, California were certainly no exception. The organizers of Gen Con had booked Bill to appear as a special guest at their 4-day gaming event months earlier, and the untimely onslaught of a cold or flu weren't going to keep him from honoring his commitment. So, he arrived on Saturday sipping a mug of tea and honey and proceded to spend the next hour amusing and entertaining the assembled audience.

Fresh from two weeks in Nashville, Tennessee, Bill spoke with excitement about his experiences recording a record album with Ben Folds. It seems that about six months earlier, Richard Foos and his brother (of Rhino Records fame) contacted Bill and told him that they were interested in making an album with him. While Bill was meeting with them in his office, Ben Folds called to ask him to appear at a concert and perform their 1998 cut from the "Fear of Pop" album called "In Love." And as fate would have it, a marriage of sorts was born. The Foos brothers loved the idea of Ben Folds producing the album.

You might wonder what type of album it was to be...and so did Bill. When he inquired that of Ben Folds some time later, Ben said he the album was to be an expression of Bill. He wanted Bill to come up with the lyrics! Write about what held meaning to him. Much different than writing a book, this would be like writing poetry. "The essense of the lyrics of a good song" Bill explained, involves saying "what you'd like to say in as little a number of words as possible...to distill the words." So, he sat down and wrote 23 songs and sent them to Ben. Approximately 14 of them ended up in the album!

It was clearly evident that Bill had a marvelous time working with Ben Folds on this new project. Going in, he knew that Ben was a "great musician" and his recent experiences only served to enhance his opinion of the man. But he found the creative process of making an album much different than that of making a film where preplanning is mandatory and the days are generally mapped out well in advance of the actual shoot. This was a much more laid back undertaking, with creative genius coming to bear and the elements of the songs falling into place in the studio, the full ensemble a vital part of the process.

When the floor was opened to questions, someone asked Bill about his experiences working with Patrick Stewart. He said that he and Patrick have become really good friends and he recalled a couple of funny incidents. One involved a cab driver who was irritated that Patrick Stewart had hailed the cab to take him across Las Vegas Boulevard, literally across the street, albeit a very wide street. The angry cab driver ordered Patrick out of his cab, only then realizing who he was. "You're Captain Picard!" he exclaimed. "You're lucky, because if you were Captain Kirk, I would have punched you out." Bill said that he and Patrick shared a good laugh over the incident.

Bill mentioned he's signed on for a Miss Congeniality sequel which will begin filming in March. He said that the script is one of the funniest that he's ever read. Sandra Bullock's character is still an FBI agent, but she's apparently "gone Hollywood" and is "all worried about her nails and her heels."

An audience member named Kelly from Virginia raised her hand and said that she and her husband had been fans since they were very young and she had come to California with her husband to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, her husband had taken ill and was in the hospital. While he couldn't attend the convention, he very much wanted her to go. She was near tears as she recalled the recent turn of events. Bill was clearly moved and brought her up on stage to pose for a couple of photos with him. It really brightened her day, and we understand that her husband has since recovered and is doing fine.

Bill was back on Sunday sounding worse than he did on Saturday, this time armed with a throat spray which he used frequently as he could barely talk. He admitted that while he should have gone home and rested the previous evening, instead he and his wife Elizabeth spent the evening with Anthony Hopkins and his lovely wife at the beach in Malibu. "That's really where I lost my voice," Bill recalled with some fondness. "He (Anthony Hopkins) was playing the piano...and I was flush with lyrics." They enjoyed a wonderful evening together despite Bill's illness.

Bill mentioned that his latest Star Trek novel written with Judy and Gar Reeves-Stevens is currently in release. It's called Captain's Blood. He said that he, Judy and Gar met with the head of Paramount a couple of months ago and pitched an idea for a new series. But alas, he doesn't think Paramount is interested. They haven't gotten back to him.

When asked how he liked his last trip to Las Vegas, Bill said that he goes to there for entertainment, for business, or for the theatre, but he doesn't go there to gamble. He might entertain himself for awhile playing the quarter slots, but "when I lose $100, don't speak to me all day!" He said that he likes "to play so that if I lose, I don't feel badly, I've amused myself." And in a near exact quote from Star Trek II, he said with a hint of amusement, "I hate to lose!"

Bill spent some time talking about the environment and how we only have a window of about 25 years to make some positive changes or it's going to be too late. "Only one generation before the oceans are too polluted, before toxins fill the air." He talked about our need to become oil independent, rely more on hybrid cars and build an infrastructure for hydrogen and fuel cell technology.

When asked how he felt about funding for space, Bill said he favors exploration of Mars rather than any attempts to shoot for the nearest star and said that when Star Trek was on the air, "we were the poster boys for NASA. Every time NASA would send up a successful rocket, our ratings would go up. And as our ratings would go up, Congress would fund more for NASA." He recalled being invited to sit in a mockup of the Lunar Module (LEM) in the 1960's with an astronaut and being told to look out the window. When he did, he saw a model of the Starship Enterprise fly by. When he climbed out of the spacecraft, he found 1,000 engineers applauding and laughing. "These incredible people who were about to do the miracle of this century - to to put a man on the moon - were all applauding." He said it was an extraordinary experience.

Someone asked Bill how he felt about Kirk dying in Generations and he recalled an incident where he was injured a few years earlier when a horse fell on him. He kept trying to get up...and kept falling back down. Bill said that he thought Kirk would look upon death in similar way, not really believe it at first, and he thought very long and hard about Kirk's final moments, wondering as most of us have at one time or another what it's like to die. He said he tried to play the scene as truthfully as he could and he was pleased with his performance when it was originally shot. But 3-4 months later, the studio contacted him and said they wanted to reshoot the ending and he was ultimately disappointed with the final cut of the scene.

One of the most interesting questions came at the end of the first day when Bill was asked what he feels he has left to achieve as an actor. He reflected back to a new song that he wrote for the new album called "Has-Been." Bill mentioned that he has, on occasion, seen himself referred to as a has-been. "It's the strangest term, 'has-been.'" Reciting some of the lyrics, he said "has-been implies failure. Not so. Has-been is history. Has been once...has been - might again!" And nothing can be truer of Bill's career.

He went on to list a number of projects on the horizon for him in 2004: a scuba diving adventure in January, his new sci-fi movie and Miss Congeniality 2. Then of course there's the Hollywood Charity Horse Show in April, SPPLAT Attack on Labor Day weekend and a dozen horse shows. So, as he concludes, "lots of stuff." We couldn't agree more. We just hope he gets some rest along the way.
