i am unable to attend grand slam and hope all is well and you have a great and wonderfull time. I hope to see you when you visit Las Vegas in august.
you are definately far from old age. My grandfather prior to his untimely death used to climb mountains and hunt. The young guys who went with him could not even keep up and he was in his eighties. a friend of mine started studying Aikido under steve seagal at age 72 and he is now Jimmy's age I believe. He has two brown belts in aikido and has a black sash in kung fu from my sifu (teacher). old age is a state of mind.
Mr. Shatner, the effect you have had on all of us, your fans and fans of star trek in general that is un-measurable. You are not only the "Classic" Captain but "The" Captain of the starship Enterprise and Star Trek in general. Star Trek would not have been what it is without your contribution.

Happy birthday, a bit late. Saw the news on WWWDN and had to get my ass over here. I've watched you and the strange bunch you hang out with in the U.S.S. Flying Mutant Chicken Wishbone (aka, Enterprise) since I was a kid in the 80s.
Although my most-watched Trek has been The Next Gen., TOS was where it all began for me. I remember watching Kirk and company with my grandpa who, as a 50-year veteran of aviation, absolutely loved Trek. The Trekkie fascination probably wasn't hereditary or anything, but I'm sure my memories of watching TOS with Grandpa didn't hinder my interest in Roddenberry's fantastic visions of the future.
And suffice it to say, Bill, you made Trek what it was. I saw the pilot of TOS once and almost laughed myself right off the couch. What a joke the show would've been with "Captain Pike"! Certainly wouldn't have been anywhere near the same...
So, anyway -- I hope last Saturday was enjoyable for you and your loved ones. 72 my ass. :)
Oh and, I have to say, after watching the Director's Cut DVD of The Motion Picture, I have never heard a funnier or more insightful comment than "This is the monster, over your right shoulder... look at it as if it's about to eat you. ... and we're pretty certain it doesn't have ears. That's acting in a sci-fi movie."
Brilliant.
Take care, sir!

Dear Mr. Shatner,
Don't know if this will ever get read by Bill, but oh well. I am 36 yr. old teacher/musician and I was born in 1966. The year that three of my favorite TV shows came on the air. The Monkees, Batman, and more importantly Star Trek. Despite the groan that it may illicit,...I have seen the Monkees twice in concert. I've met and interviewed Adam West twice. And I've seen Frank Gorshin "The Riddler" of Batman, in his one man show on Broadway "Say Goodnight Gracie" three times. I even met him twice after the show. Great show by the way.
At any rate, the holy grail of my quest would be to meet, who by all accounts is my idol, William Shatner. I could say many things but I'll sum it up with a story I've always hoped to tell him in person. Shatner's quite a bigger star than either Gorshin or Adam West so I'm not likely to catch him in the alley of the Helen Hayes theater getting a smoke with the lid to the trash can lid up so he can hide from the fans after a performance of his one man show (I've done this twice to Gorshin now).
The story simply put is a reminiscence of a Richard Benjamin directed movie called My Favorite Year. It's about a young guy who works for a Sid Ceasar, Your Show of Shows type program. This young guy meets the guest star on the show this particular week who just happens to be his all time Idol. The guest star, played by Peter O'toole, is an Errol Flynn swashbuckling type of character. He basically exclaims at one point that he is just a silly @#$%amn movie star and not to worship him, but he was always real to this fan.
That is much the way I feel about Shatner. He was real to me. Is real to me. It took the person inside to play the character that I love. It's not all fairy tale. You're real to me Mr. Shatner. My wife and I would both like to meet you someday. If nothing else I hope you get my letter. You are important to me.
Oh, and happy birthday
Thank You
Andy Patterson

>Michael Yorkshire: Mike, thanks for the great stories. We appreciate such things during such turbulent times. I was curious, given this whole Bring Back Kirk thing going on ... is such an idea an inviting/inspiring plot device to you? Or would you see it as something kind of contrived? If the latter, would you be able to negotiate a balance? (I'm a writer, too ... and curious about other peoples' creative processes)
