Fan Club Bill got in a little paintball practice with JJ Brookshire and friends at the Hollywood Sports Park in Bellflower, California recently. Join us as we go behind the scenes with the weekend warriors.

December 3, 2002

A couple of weeks ago, Bill got in some paintball practice with JJ Brookshire (SPPLAT) and friends at the Hollywood Sports Park in Bellflower, California. The venue is just one of several that are under consideration for next year's SPPLAT Attack and features four paintball scenario fields, BMX biking, in-line skating, skateboarding, rock climbing, volleyball, basketball, tennis and even an arcade.

After touring the facility and donning protective gear, Bill and company entered the Tombraider fantasy field and broke into two opposing teams. There was a rapid and fierce exchange of paintballs...and within a very short period of time both Bill and JJ were hit and retreated to the sidelines to wait for the game to play itself out. As you can see, Bill took a direct hit to the face and said he never saw it coming. JJ received a shoulder wound.

In the second round of play, Bill took cover behind a large rock formation, held his position and eliminated a good number of the "enemy." The yellow paint splatter on the rockface to the left reflects the ferocity of the battle, and the unsuccessful attempts of the enemy to take out Bill. Throughout the day, Bill had the benefit of learning "tried and true" paintball techniques from some of the veteran players who were on hand. For example, he learned how to position his marker so that he would have room to pivot and shoot without putting himself in the line of fire.

After two rounds of play, everyone left the field for a short break to regroup. Dan Gauthier was especially excited, having taken out close to a dozen of the opposing team!

We recognized Dan as the lead actor in Groom Lake and asked him how he came to be playing paintball that afternoon. As we anticipated, Dan smiled and replied "Bill." He even brought his 10-12 year old son with him to play the game. They both had a great time.

After the break, a group of pro-paintballers challenged everyone to a game matching their small group of 6-7against the rest of the players which numbered around 20 people. The game was held on the Godzilla fantasy field which was populated with damaged houses and beat up cars and busses. All of the fields utilize actual movie props from major motion pictures to create the fantasy fields of play. This "set" resembled the Godzilla 2000 movie.

Bill took cover in the second story of a huge rectangular steel structure with open windows resembling portholes. Several seasoned players positioned themselves in the same area. With a distinct advantage over the playing field, they waged a good defense! And Bill went through several containers (aka hoppers) of paintballs!

Even some kids got into the spirit of the game! This young man above, took position behind Bill in the second game and yelled, "William... William... I'm behind you." He wanted to let Bill know he was there for backup. Bill, who was trying to defend against heavy fire at the time, smiled and said, "That's probably not a very good place to be." Afterwards, the two warriors walked off the field together, sharing stories of the long, hard fought battle.

After the third game, Bill and the troops came off the field and spent some time talking paintball and reliving the days' events. There was a lot of comraderie among the players. Many of them use paintball as a way to "blow off steam" after a long hard week at work.

JJ introduced Bill to Yvonnie (who goes by the name TooDamSweet on the Shatner BBS) and her boyfriend Rey aka TooDamHot who met at the SPPLAT Attack charity event back in August. Could there be wedding bells in the future? Only they know for sure. Bill was touched by the story of how they met and joined their hands as he posed with them for a quick photo.
